2, Flat Face Cat, Large
Height: 8 15/16”
Designer: Tom Masterson
Production Date: Spring 1959
Mold Book Name: Cat flat face lrg
Notes: This piece appears on the order form, but only two examples are known, of which one is a custom. The custom is 9 3/16” tall, larger due to being from a waste mold. Note that the front paws change between molds. Both pieces shown are from the Hagen-Renaker Archives.
3, Flat Face Cat, Medium
Height: 5 7/8”
Designer: Tom Masterson
Production Date: not produced
Mold Book Name: Cat flat face med
Notes: This piece does not appear on the order form. Note that the front paws change between mold versions. The green example is from the Hagen-Renaker Archives. See also comparison photo for relative sizes of the three Flat-Faced Cats.
4, Flat Face Cat, Small
Height: 3 ¾”
Designer: Tom Masterson
Production Date: Spring 1959
Mold Book Name: Cat flat face sm
Notes: The employee custom shown here is satin black, the same as on some production Black Bisques. It is 3 15/16” tall, probably from a waste mold. It is one of the most common Black Bisque pieces. See also comparison photo for relative sizes of the three Flat-Faced Cats.
A-461/462, Hedgehog
Height: ½”
Designer: Martha Armstrong
Production Date: not produced
Mold Book Name: none
Notes: These are the only known examples of Miniatures Hedgehogs, tested in the Black Bisque style and from the personal collection of Martha Armstrong. It is not known if they represent the Mama (A-461) or the Baby (A-462) Hedgehog.
9, Horse
Height: 4 5/8”
Designer: Maureen Love
Production Date: Spring 1959
Mold Book Name: Horse
Notes: A satin finish variation exists.
This is the same mold as the Planter series horse, which was offered in various solid gloss art glazes (green, red, orange).
2005-2021, as "Retro." (Limited Edition of 1000, on base. The first color offered was iridescent blue. In 2006, the choices of iridescent yellow, green, and pink were added. The run did not sell out but as of 2020, green had been removed as a color option. Retail price was $120.)
17, Panther
Height: 2 ¼”
Designer: Helen Perrin Farnlund
Production Date: not produced
Mold Book Name: Panther
Notes: This piece does not appear on the order form and was never produced. The example shown is probably a test, with the white chunky enamel texture, underneath brushed-on black, and a gloss dip glaze.
7, Skunk
Height: 2 ¾”
Designer: Tom Masterson [Maureen Love]
Production Date: Spring 1959
Mold Book Name: Skunk
Notes: This piece did not appear on the order form. The small piece shown here is a test from waste mold; the normal Skunk does not have a glazed nose and closed eyes. (See comparison photo). Also shown is the giant 10” version that Maureen Love sculpted and glazed. This unique piece indicates that Maureen, not Tom, was the actual designer of the Black Bisque mold.
